Creating a brighter future for foster children.
Promises2Kids annually provides over 6,000 current and former foster youth in San Diego County with the tools, opportunities, and guidance they need to address the circumstances that brought them into foster care, overcome the difficulties of their past, and grow into healthy, happy and successful adults. Promises2Kids will concentrate on the following program areas, in addition to its community drives, Rivers of Hope Birthday Club and the Something Special Fund:
Guardian Scholars Program
The Guardian Scholars program was born out of a partnership with the Orangewood Children's Foundation who approached Promises2Kids about replicating its successful Guardian Scholars program in San Diego County. Promises2Kids' Guardian Scholars program was adapted in 2001 to support youth with acquiring a community college or trade school education, in addition to the traditional university education. The program is designed to provide youth with a partial financial scholarship as well as mentorship to assist them in adapting and excelling in their higher education setting.
Camp Connect
Promises2Kids partners with the Health and Human Services Agency of San Diego County in order to provide foster children with the opportunity to reconnect with their siblings who live a part through a four-day summer camp and structured recreational and educational activities throughout the year. This program allows children to build further on sibling interaction and enhance a sense of belonging.
Polinsky Children's Center
Promises2Kids supports a wide range of services at the Polinsky Children's Center including the Developmental Screening and Enhancement Program (DSEP), which detects developmental delays in foster children ages birth to five; Pet Encounter Therapy which brings the tactile and healing benefits of animals to abused children; Youth to Youth Advocate Program, a powerful and peer-driven mentoring program that matches successful former foster youth with youth in the foster care system; and an on-site Developmental Preschool to provide children with a supportive teacher who implements lessons and activities that are instrumental to their development; and Recreation and Life Skills, which includes structured activities such as dance and art classes, cooking classes, and organized sports games.
